It was during the 1930's-1960's in Manhattan, New York that my grandfather owned a garment factory which manufactured women's dresses. My father, after serving in the Korean War, went to work for him and later became his partner. As a child I would watch 50 sewing machine operators turn out hundreds of dresses in a day. By the 1960s much of the US garment industry had moved overseas, so in 1965 my family moved to Michigan. Here my father learned new canvas crafts while woking for a well known company that manufactured collapsible tent style camper-trailers.

In 1976, combining two different fabric crafts, my father started The Canvas Shoppe Inc. in his basement. He applied the same techniques used for dress making to canvas. His covers were darted to fit snug around every curve of a car or boat. Since Michigan is full of lakes and car factories, boat and car covers seemed a great new business opportunity. At twenty years old I went to work with my father to help grow the business. He then bought our current building and made several expansions with bays to allow cars and boats to pull inside for precise fittings. Ten years later I purchased the business when health issues forced my father to retire early.

With time comes change and over the years we would make covers for anything we could pattern. After a while I decided to streamline my products to just include boats and cars. This helped control quality and efficiency. Time also brought along the World Wide Web and increased our visiblity to customers beyond Michigan.
